How Much Fishing Line Do You Need For Shark Fishing?

Many anglers ask the question:  "How much fishing line should I use for shark fishing?" It kinda depends.  Below we will dial into how much you need for different situations.

How Much Line Do I Need For Fishing For Sharks From A Boat?

Inshore Fishing For Sharks From A Boat

If you are fishing for sharks inshore in waters under 100 feet you only need between 300-500 yds of line. This is because with a boat you can chase your shark and in this case the shark cannot go to far down.

Offshore Fishing For Sharks

If you are fishing for sharks offshore you want to have three times the depth of the water on your reel. This is because the shark can sound, and while you can chase it, you need enough line to have a little bit of angle on the line since no captain is going to be able to stay 100% straight up and down with the shark at all times.

How Much Line Do I Need For Fishing For Sharks From Land?

When fishing from land for sharks there how much line you use depends on the size shark that you are targeting.

Targeting Sharks With Casted Baits From Land (Mostly Sharks Under 6ft)

If you are casting sharks from land with casted baits (a method that is usually used for targeting sharks 6ft and under) you will want to use 300-500 yds of line.

Targeting Sharks With Kayaked Baits

If you are targeting sharks from land with kayaked baits (a method usually used to target sharks above 6 ft) you are going to want to have at least 1000 yds of line on your reel. This is because you cannot chase your shark and you will often send your bait out 200-300 yds to begin with.
