How Not To Remove A Hook From A Sharks Mouth

I have been shark fishing for a little over a decade now and one thing that really appeals to me is the danger aspect of the sport. I know its risky and the adrenaline rush you get while dealing with giant sharks in neck deep water with razor sharp teeth just gets me going! There really is nothing like it.

"every second that fish isn't swimming with water running past its gills increases the likelihood of a mortality and unhealthy release. "

However, over the years one thing I have never gambled with is rebooking sharks with my bare hands! This past winter my buddy Mitchell and a group of friends were fishing during the blacktip shark migration and we ended up landing a 9ft hammerhead shark. One thing we try to avoid is prolonging a hammerheads release to remove the hook. Its not that we want to leave the fish with jewelry, but every second that fish isn't swimming with water running past its gills increases the likelihood of a mortality and unhealthy release.

Sometimes its better to just leave the hook in the sharks mouth, in which it will either rust out or simply fall out with time. this has been proven time and again in multiple studies and researchers tell us it is better to leave hooks in gut hooked fish especially. Trying to remove the hook from a gut hooked fish is more problematic than good, as fish are know to survive with hooks for years!

My buddy Mitchell really wanted to remove the hook from this shark and even did so bare handed! A very risky and unsafe move that I do not recommend to anyone! One swift move from the hammerhead and he could have lost a finger or hand. Sharks are very unpredictable and fast, so don't ever try to remove the hook bare handed. If you cannot remove it with a dehooker or bolt cutters, leave it be and release the beast as fast as possible.
