Using Braided Fishing Line As Fly Backing

Fly Reel Braided Backing
Bullbuster's founder caught this big Patagonia Rainbow trout on a streamer. It took the fly reel well into its backing during its first run.

Many people ask us if they can use our braided fishing lines as fly backing.  The answer is yes!  Fly shops around the country use braided fishing line to back their fly reels.

What Lb Braid Should I Use To Back My Fly Reel?

Bulk Fly Reel Backing
You can buy bulk fly reel backing directly from our factory on this site.

20-50 Lb braided fishing line is excellent for backing your fly reel.  If you are fishing in salt-water we recommend going in the 30-50 LB braided range. If you are fishing in freshwater try scaling down in the 20Lb-40 Lb range.

How Often Should I Change My Fly Backing?

Fly Reel Backing For Bonefish
Bullbuster Ambassador Flying Fish Charters out of Key West caught this bonefish after blistering runs that took his client into the backing of his fly reel.

We get this question a lot.  The short answer is between 6 months to a year if you pull out your fly gear often and don’t treat it well.  You can probably get 1-2 years out of gear that you don’t use that often and you take good care of.

Check out this video posted on Youtube by "The Fly Fishers Fly Shop"  shows you the basic way to connect fly backing to your reel.
