Sailfish Catch With Flying Fish Charters!
Welcome back to the Lower Keys Fishing Report, the weather down here has not been great, at the moment we are experiencing the effects of Tropical Storm Alberto. Even before the storm, the weather down here for the past couple weeks has been super windy and rainy. The offshore fishing has been fantastic though. Usually, we are doing all dolphin fishing this time of year, but we had a late run of sailfish and the bite has been the best its been in years. They have been tailing down sea with eastbound current. When you can sea the sailfish tailing, I live targeting them with live bait, either, ballyhoo, pilchards or thread herring on spinning rods so you can cast accurately. I like using long leaders, of 40lb Bullbuster Fluorocarbon and circle hooks. If you’re not seeing any fish tailing, you can drift or slow troll these live baits around a color change. There have also been huge blackfin tunas offshore, some bigger than 30lbs. It has been tough making it offshore with the weather, but if you can tough it out, it’s been great.

The backcountry fishing has been tough. When it hasn’t been raining, we have had super thick cloud cover and that makes sight casting very difficult. On top of that we are not seeing many tarpon around Key West. Tarpon can be sensitive to changes in weather, so this tropical system sitting over us has made tarpon fishing challenging. There are some bonefish around on the flats, but take your time poling, there are not easy to see with these clouds. There are still plenty of big mangrove snappers and jacks in some of the backcountry channels. This is always a great option for when we have terrible weather because you stay protected from the wind and catch plenty of tasty fish. Usually, I like chumming with dead stuff, but use big live baits on your hooks, that way you can catch the bigger snappers.
