Crazy Fishing This Week!

Sailfish
Sailfish

Overall, the fishing in Key West has been decent this past week.  We had some really nice weather last weekend and earlier this week, but now the fan got turned on and its blowing 20-25 knots out of the east.  On the bright side, it is calling for lighter winds and sunny skies for this weekend.  The offshore fishing has been slow, there has not been much current out there and the blue water moved out away from the reef.  There have been a few dolphin caught and a few sailfish hanging around, but overall the offshore fishing has been slow.  Hopefully, this big breeze we have going on now will mix it up out there and some more fish will move in.

Mutton Snapper
Mutton Snapper

The offshore wrecks have been producing nice fish, like blackfin tunas, amberjacks and mutton snappers.  When the fishing offshore is slow, you can always go drop some baits down on a wreck.  When, I’m fishing for the mutton snappers, I like using long, 20ft leaders of 40lb to 50lb Bullbuster Flourocarbon.  The long leaders are important because your bait looks much more appealing when its dangling way out past the lead weight.  Live baits like pilchards and ballyhoo work great, but dead squid and bonita strips will work as well.  You can catch plenty of other fish besides mutton snappers too, like grouper, amberjacks and african pompano.

Tarpon
Tarpon

The fishing in the backountry has been awesome, with plenty of big tarpon around.  It is a lot harder to get them to eat when its windy, but when the weather is nice, they have been eating well.  The next couple months are prime tarpon time here in the lower keys; you can target them with flies, artificial lures and live bait.   There have also been plenty of bonefish around this spring.  We have seen some big schools or bonefish and that fishing should remain good throughout the summer.
