Beautiful Day In The Lower Keys!!

Welcome back to the Lower Keys Fishing Report, we have had some beautiful fishing and great weather here in the lower keys. If your planning on getting out on the water these next few days, you’re in luck, the forecasters are calling for light winds and sunny skies. The offshore fishing has been excellent, with plenty of blackfin tunas around. The sailfish bite was great for a while, but it has slowed up some recently. Pilchards are the key to success offshore, you can catch everything with them and they have still been pretty thick on the south side of the lower keys; especially for this time of year, as they start to thin out.

Reef fishing has been decent, with some big yellowtail and mangrove snappers around along with some big kings and bonitas. Its been taking a lot of chum to get the yellowtails to eat, but we have been catching fish around 3 to 4lbs. My typical setup for yellowtail snapper fishing is medium size spinning tackle with 15lb Bullbuster monofilament as my main line and 20lb Bullbuster fluorocarbon leaders. If your marking fish and there not biting, you may have to go with a lighter leader. I always like to keep a live bait, whether a pilchard or ballyhoo, floating way out back in the chum slick. You never know what other predators will swim into your chum slick, but regardless of what it is, it will eat a live bait.

The tarpon fishing in the backcountry has started to pick back up this week too. It was a matter of time, with the light winds and warm water, that the tarpon were going to move back in around Key West. Live pinfish seem to be working the best on them, but live crabs and other artificial lures will work too. There have been plenty of big barracudas on the flats and they have been super aggressive chasing tubes and other top water lures. We haven’t been seeing a lot of Permit around the flats, most of them seem to have moved offshore to spawn, but we have been seeing a few bonefish in shallows.
