Key West Fishing Report
The offshore fishing continues to get better around key West. The sailfish bite has been more consistent; a lot of boats are reporting multiple hook ups on them. Threadfin herring and goggle eyes are the bait of choice. You can hook some fish dead bait trolling, but you will get more bites on live baits. The blackfin tuna fishing continues to be awesome offshore. They have been eating live baits well, but the guys trolling have been doing really well too, usually later in the afternoon and evening. I would expect the offshore fishing to stay good as we approach this next full moon, we have had good current offshore and the wind looks like it will be coming mostly from the northeast.
We have done some fishing in the gulf this week as the wind was coming from the south and it has been good out there. There have been some kingfish, mutton snappers, big lane snappers and cobia. The shrimp boats have also been holding blackfin tuna, if you can make the run out to them. There have been some enormous sharks around too, both in the Atlantic and the Gulf side. This is the time of year for big hammerheads and big tiger sharks.
The backcountry fishing was great earlier this week, but things have slowed up around Key West the past two days as the wind shifted to the north. We finally had some great tarpon fishing, they were eating crabs, pinfish and Hogy Lures. When I am fishing for tarpon, I like using 30lb Bullbuster braid on my main line and I like using 40-50lb Bullbuster fluorocarbon leaders. If I can get away with using a heavier leader, I always will go with 50lb leader. However, if the water is clear and the fish are finicky, you may have to drop down to 40lb leaders. I would think the tarpon fishing is going to be slower this week, as the we are forecasted to have heavy winds and cooler temperatures.
