Weekly Fishing Report for Key West!

The fishing down here in Key West has started to pick up this past week and the weather for this weekend looks nice as well. The water offshore continues to look awesome as the fishing continues to get better. We have had some sailfish show up this week and few boats had multiple hook ups. Most of the fish that were caught were on live baits, but some were caught dead bait trolling. The tuna bite has slowed up some, but the wind is coming out of the southeast the last few days so that was expected. There have also been a few mahi showing up out there, with the blue water offshore I would think there should be some mahi around this weekend as well. Some mahi were caught out of the blue, but there were some light weed lines offshore that were holding mahi as well.

"The permit spawn should continue for the next couple months. There have also ben some big amberjacks on the offshore wrecks."
The reef has not been productive this week for the yellowtail snapper. The blue water has pushed in over the reef and many times that can slow down the snapper bite. However, there have still been some kingfish around and the permit are spawning out there. The permit spawn should continue for the next couple months. There have also ben some big amberjacks on the offshore wrecks. You can catch them on vertical jigs or any kind of live bait you drop down on the wreck. Your going to need to use some heavy gear if your fishing for amberjacks. I like using 50-60lb Bullbuster braid as my main line and I like using 60lb Bullbuster fluorocarbon leaders. Make sure you use the appropriate size terminal tackle as well; you do not want to be straightening hooks or breaking swivels.

"With the water temperature on the rise and nice warm weather forecasted for the weekend, we may see a few more fish show up."
There have been some Tarpon around in the backcountry, but not in any great numbers yet, it would appear they are showing up a little later this season. The few fish we have been able to find, have been willing to eat though. Some guys have been hooking them on live baits, but we got a few bites on soft plastics. With the water temperature on the rise and nice warm weather forecasted for the weekend, we may see a few more fish show up. We did see a few bonefish this past week, but not as many as I expected with the warm water temperature.
