"We had some cooler temps, nice weather and beautiful blue water offshore, but the bite has never really come together." Key West Fishing slow but steady.

"The tunas have been the only consistent bite offshore."
Hey Everybody, sorry for missing a couple reports, it’s getting busy down here in Key West, but unfortunately the fishing has been decent at best. We had some cooler temps, nice weather and beautiful blue water offshore, but the bite has never really come together. There have been a few sailfish and a few mahi caught, but for the conditions we have offshore, it should be much better. The tuna bite continues to be awesome and that has been mostly happening around the evening time or early in the morning. The tunas have been the only consistent bite offshore. We have had some other species mixed in with the tunas when we have been live baiting them around the wrecks, like rainbow runners, amberjacks and jack crevalles, and bonitas.

"You have to use lighter gear on the permit because they can see very well."
The reef has not been very productive the past few days either, we have almost no current and it has made snapper fishing difficult. However, the permit have begun to spawn on some of the reefs and offshore rock piles. They are pretty easy to see tailing or floating in certain areas, and they are usually pretty quick to eat a live crab. When the permit are in deeper water, they are less spooky and much easier to catch compared to when they are on the flats or in shallow water. You have to use lighter gear on the permit because they can see very well. I like using small spinning gear with 20lb bullbuster braid and long 20lb bullbuster fluorocarbon leaders.

We have started to see a lot more tarpon in the back country this past week. With the cooler temperature it has been difficult to get them to bite, but once it warms up, there should be some good tarpon fishing. Any day now, the tarpon bite should turn on. We haven’t seen many bonefish or permit around either and that is mostly likely a factor of the colder weather too. The barracudas have been active on the flats and there have been some big fish around. The cuda tubes and other top water lures have been working well on the barracudas.
