Febuary 15th Key West Fishing Report

Overall, the fishing has been awesome here in the lower keys and weather for this weekend is really looking great. The forecast is calling for bright sunshine and 10-15 mph winds out of the east. The dolphin bite offshore has been good, its rare to catch them like this in February, but we have had warm weather and there have been weed lines offshore. The tuna bite offshore has been good as well. Guys have been catching them on the troll or using live baits. The wahoo have also showed up coming off this full moon. They tend to congregate around structure, so you can find them around wrecks or certain areas around the reef.

Reef fishing has been good, with a consistent yellowtail snapper bite and some big kingfish. Keeping a live bait, like a ballyhoo, on the surface, way far back in your chum slick can be a great way to hook the kings. The ballyhoo have been thick on the reef and the inshore rock piles and it has not been taking them long to find your chum slick. Yellowjacks, bonitas, mutton snappers and grouper were all caught on the reef this past week too.

The fishing in the backcountry has really been excellent and you have plenty of options right now. The first school of migratory tarpon have showed up in Key West. It the first sign of spring when you see the tarpon start to come into the channels. They have been eating bait well, but it has been hard to get them to eat a fly or an artificial. Keys tarpon can be finicky and using light fluorocarbon leaders, like Bullbuster 50lb, can make all the difference. The barracuda fishing on the flats has been excellent, there are a lot of barracudas around they have have been aggressive. There have also been a few permit in the shallows, the rest of February and March can be a great time to target them on the flats. There has been a lot of action in the basins right now. The trout are thick, along with ladyfish, jacks, snappers and spinner sharks.
