Welcome back to the Lower Keys Fishing Report, we have some serious wind at the moment, but it is coming down for the weekend. Most of the weekend has the wind coming out of the north and northeast around 10mph, but if you go out Saturday, be aware of some leftover swell. Currently the wind is gusting over 40mph out of the west so the water will be churned up this weekend and there will some waves leftover. The offshore fishing was awesome before this front arrived and if the blue water stays in close to the reef it should still be great. A light north wind and a full moon should make for great winter fishing. The wahoo were around in the middle of the week, some guys were spearing them, some guys were catching them on the troll and you can live bait them also. I like using Bullbuster Monofilament wen I’m wahoo fishing; those fish are super fast and they have soft mouths, so its nice to have a mainline that will stretch and has give to it. The blackfin tuna bite was also great, there have been plenty of them hanging around the wrecks and they have been eating pilchards well.
As far as flats fishing goes, we’ve been mainly targeting barracudas, but we have seen some bonefish when we get a warmer spell of weather and the bonefish we’ve seen have been big. The temperature is going to be in the high 60’s all weekend and the water will be dirty so most likely they won’t be around. Snapper fishing in the backcountry should be good this weekend. You can target them close to the mangroves or in some of the backcountry channels. We get some big mangrove snappers and mutton snappers that push in shallows when the water gets cold. The can bend some rods and those fish taste awesome.
