Fishing Report:

Wahoo Are NOT As SMART As People Think...

Catch & Cook Wahoo

Growing up as a young angler, I always thought certain fish were out of reach and only available to the elite anglers, who had mastered their craft. Wahoo was one of these species. I knew people got luck offshore and caught them by off chance, but the guys who consistently put these torpedoes of the sea just dumbfounded me. I always thought there was this secret offshore society that only the guys who had in, knew the secrets to catching these elusive predatory pelagics.

Well It turned out I was completely wrong!

"We went own a whim, trolled giant lures at the right speed and were rewarded with two wahoo our very first time high speed wahoo trolling!"

Wahoo like any other species, have patterns, preferences to baits/lures and locations. There was no mythical aura surrounding these, I just didn't have the resources or the knowledge in hand to tackle these zebras.

This past Summer I got a chance to go to Bimini with a group of friends and one thing we really wanted to give a go was high speed wahoo trolling. We had no idea if the wahoo were around, as they generally do not show up in the Bahamas till wintertime, where they are heavily targeted. We went own a whim, trolled giant lures at the right speed and were rewarded with two wahoo our very first time high speed wahoo trolling! I was honestly shocked to see those stripes being flipped over the rail, as we had no experience with this fishery what so ever. We were just in the right place at the right time, experimented with speed, depth and our array of lures and Bam two of the fish I thought I'd never see face to face were laying before me.

Fishing is made out to be a lot more complex than we make it. You can get as technical as you want and perfect your craft within certain species, but at the end of the day there are tried and true methods to every fishery. For some reason Wahoo just love a giant lure trolled at obnoxiously fast speeds. Maybe its because they don't have much time to react and take a swipe at a free meal, or the fast moving lure just pisses them off. Who knows, all I know is that sashimi is on the menu.
