First Great White Of The 2018 Season
Its the only time of the year that when the alarm goes off at 5am, you don't hit snooze. Ive been waiting for these days for months. Electricity was in the air! The weather finally looked perfect. Variable winds, calm seas and a boat loaded with bait, it doesn't get any better.
"One of the coolest things about white sharks is that they fight on the surface"
We shoved off at 6am with a crew of myself and two others. The ocean was so calm that the water was hissing off the hull, I love it. I had a few spots i wanted to check before committing, so we zig-zagged a little looking around for bait, decent water clarity and birds. We finally settled on a spot and got the chum going. It looked good. Since we got an early start I knew the odds were in our favor, considering I was prepared to wait until midnight if needed.
"she never tried to bite the boat or chomp at my limbs... as we took samples and applied her tags"
The fish Gods were smiling on us, by 10am we had our first white shark on. I wish I could tell you that everything went perfect, but it just wasn't meant to be. I don't call it a catch unless we grab the leader, and this girl spit the hook before we had her under control. No leader, no tag, 0-1. We got reset, started chumming again in hopes their was another in the area. It didn't take long before this beautiful great white shark shows up behind the boat and ready to eat. It was a juvenile, a little short of 10ft. She took the bait and we were off to the races.
One of the coolest things about white sharks is that they fight on the surface-- this girl tore off 200 yards across the top of a glassy sea like a jet torpedo. Wish I had that on video. We gave chase and had her boatside within 15 minutes. Out of all the white sharks I've landed, this one was the easiest to handle. She didn't show any signs of aggression, she never tried to bite the boat or chomp at my limbs. We just slowly kept the boat moving forward as we took samples and applied her tags. She really didn't care, I was surprised. Her tail just wagged back and forth as we calmly got the data.
One of the guys on the boat was fishing with me for the first time. I'll never forget his excitement. As he's holding the dorsal fin while we're removing the hook he yells "Holy crap, im holding the fin of a great white shark"!! Its cool to see others get as excited as I do because its easy to get too comfortable and take things for granted. All in all it was a perfect day. Our first white shark expedition of the season went off nearly flawless, with just barely missing that first one. I can't wait to see what this season has in store for us.
