Calaveras Lake Redfish
Another work week gone and another weekend to fish! The desire to fish the coast keeps growing but every weekend we have a cold front approaching every weekend it seems and for me when the winds are gusting into the 30+ mph winds it makes it hard for me to make the 2 hour drive and come back with no fish.
Regardless of the winds we decided to fish Calaveras lake and decide to fish table 18 and it’s a spot that has been producing redfish off the bank consistently. Last article I caught my biggest catfish and 2 limits of reds and this weekend ended up with limits of redfish!
Bait preferred for right now till crawfish season is over is CRAWFISH with fishbites crab. Another option is to use 3 flavors of fishbites such as Crab, shrimp and crawfish on a 5/0 to 7/0 circle hook. Choose a hook that you prefer but I use 7/0 majority of the time.
Distance is key to catching bigger redfish and if your casting shallow you will end up with redfish in the 23in range but if you get a decent cast at 100 yards or so then redfish will be around the 27 to 29in. Bigger redfish are in deeper water right now so I would kayak out some baits a good ways out and you will end up with a 30+ in redfish. Some spots are shallow enough to walk a good ways out so a kayak is not needed but table 18 is not very walkable since it gets deep faster. Daytime the bite is slow unless you can get way deeper than 100 yards but fish will still be caught casting off bank but night time the bite turns on and distance at night reduces to get at least 80 yards or so.
