“IT’S NOT OVER TILL IT’S OVER!â€
During those long days on the water regardless of he amount of fishing action I try to remember that saying as it holds true on many occasions. On a recent trolling trip on the west side of Oahu, Hawaii, I joined captain Garrett Lee of Tsutomu Lures (www.tsutomulures.com) on the F/V Anne’s Revenge for a day chasing ahi or yellowfin tuna.

We had heard the ahi were around and biting so we headed out to the area that the porpoise piles were seen the day before. After a couple of hours of fishing in the porpoise pile, we got lucky with a nice 150 pound ahi. The pressure was off and we were stoked to say the least. Our excitement shot through the roof after seeing a couple other boats in the area fighting fish and we began thinking that maybe we could hook more ahi if we were lucky. We continued to work the pile and followed it farther and farther away from our launch point. Realizing the amount of distance we needed to cover to return to port we decided to leave the pile and head home.

As with most fishermen, we trolled some lures behind the boat as we made our way home. Just after the sun dropped below the horizon with 7 miles to port, our short corner pole swung around and line began melting off the Shimano Tiagra 130. As if the violent screaming of the reel didn’t already signal a marlin bite, we were treated to an awesome aerial display as a 300 plus pound marlin began jumping with its body fully out of the water. Unfortunately, the line went slack after a half spool run but as Garrett was clearing one of the outrigger poles the line went tight and we had the mate hooked up and jumping 20 yards off the starboard side of the boat! We fought the fish hard for an hour and finally had it in the boat. This fish was a little smaller but we were still happy to have landed a beautiful 320 pound marlin on a 7 inch Tsutomu bullet head lure rigged with Bullbuster 300 pound grander leader. We landed the fish around 8:45 pm and made our way back with 7 miles still to go. It was a long, tiring night but well worth it getting the buzzer beater strike with another “it’s not over til it’s over†fishing story in the books. Aloha.
