Welcome back to the Lower Keys Fishing Report, we’ve had a breezy week here, but the forecast looks nice for the weekend.  The wind looks like it will mostly be coming out of the north at 10-15 mph with partly cloudy skies.  For the guys who could make it offshore, tuna bite continues to be good and the mahi mahi fishing has been excellent offshore. There are plenty of mahi around and some fish are over 30lbs.  Fishing offshore should be nice this weekend, light north winds make fishing offshore great this time of year.  Its also a matter of time before we start to see good numbers of sailfish down here.  If we get the blue water to push in close to the reef, the wahoo may come back in too.

On the flats this week, we have just been barracuda fishing and that has been good.  Some big fish have shown up in the shallows and catching them on light tackle is a blast.  I usually fish the cudas with 20lb Bullbuster Braid for my main line.  The braid is great for casting and you can put a few hundred yards of 20lb braid on most 4000 size spinning reels.  I haven’t seen any bonefish and permit recently, but if we start getting warmer weather we should see some of those fish.  Fishing in the basins has been great and it should stay that way as long as we’re getting colder, breezy weather.  We try to fish around the mud slicks, which is churned up water, from the mullet and other fish in the area.  There have been snappers, barracudas, big jacks and some nice size speckled trout in the mud slicks.
