Lower Keys October 2018 Fishing Report
Welcome back to the Lower Keys Fishing Report, we’ve had a breezy week down here, but it looks like the wind is letting up for the weekend. The wind is dropping out on Saturday and should be around 10mph by the afternoon and Sunday looks like its going to be less than 10mp with sunny skies. I do not have reports of anyone who had made it offshore the past couple days, but it should be good out there this weekend as we approach this next full moon. The tunas have been out there and that should stay good and if the conditions are right, the wahoo may start to show up as well. Both these fish like structure and you can target them by trolling or live bait fishing some of the deeper reefs of offshore wrecks. Even in the wind, the reef fishing has been excellent, especially west of Key West. There have been plenty of nice size yellowtails, mutton snappers and a few kingfish have started showing up. The kings were really into the live ballyhoos on the surface with the double hook wire rig.
The backcountry fishing has been tough the past few days with the heavy winds we’ve had, but before that it was great. The water is still warm and there are still plenty of small tarpon schools. These guys have been super aggressive, eating flies and other artificial lures. Bonefishing has been excellent too. We had a lot of nice shots at fish last weekend and we saw schools of up to 12 fish. When I’m fishing a flat that can have both small tarpon and bonefish, I like starting with 4000 size spinning reel, light action rod and a small bucktail jig. The reel is spooled with 20lb Bulbuster Braid and my leaders are 20lb Bullbuster Flourocarabon. The sharks have also been around in the backcountry and they do not mind the breezy weather. If your having a tough day, its always nice to be able to set up around a flats, chum the sharks in, and bend some rods.
