Kayak Fishing In Florida Panhandle Canals

American Yaker Kevin Olson and myself tried out a new area in Santa Rosa sound yesterday morning. There were some good looking inlets and canals to the west of the launch and we were hoping to find some fish stacked up in them. The air and water temperature have really climbed recently due to higher than average temps so I figured the fish would be pretty active.

We started fishing the mouth of the first inlet we came to. Kevin was the first to hook up with a small speckled trout. Then there was nothing for a bit. I pushed further back in the canal and while slowing bouncing my lure along the bottom, I managed to hook and land a 13†Flounder, was a nice surprise. That was the last fish we caught there though, and that would be the story the rest of the morning.

Each canal we caught one or two fish at but the bites were few and far between. We ended with a tally of 4 fish for Kevin(2 short trout, one rat red, and one 21†red) and 5 for myself(1 flounder, 3 short trout, and 1 18†trout). Was a slow day but was nice to still find a few fish! Kevin caught all his fish on a Zman Diezel Minnowz in Bad Shad on an 1/8th oz DOA jig head while all mine were caught on a Zman Scented Paddlerz in Bad Shad on an 1/8th oz DOA jig head.
