Catch Clean Cook Glass Minnows- Anchovy!
This article is exactly what it sounds like!
Every year I have watched people of all cultures partake in the glass minnow runt hat occurs on our Florida beaches. Some people are in search of the predators, namely tarpon and others are more interested in the minnows themselves.
Over the last two years I have tried more species of fish than I have my whole life and a lot others would deem to be "Trash fish"
I have yet to try a fish I didn't like, despite common thought.
So it thought to myself why would Glass minnows be any different.
These little baits , congregate by the millions right of the beach and can be very easily caught with a smaller mesh cast net, in the 3/16 mesh size. Anything bigger and you will gill the majority of the minnows.
I headed down to the beach with my gf Brook and we immediately started to fill a cooler full of anchovies. There were some pilchards mixed in that we separated and saved for bait.
As far as cleaning the anchovies are concerned, some people eat them whole head, guts and all! While others like myself, twist and rip the head off with the guts attached. These fish are incredibly easy to clean, just very time consuming!
After I removed all the heads and guts, I rinsed them in a saltwater slurry 3 or 4 times and each time straining the grey scaly and gutty water through a sieve.
To prepare our minnows I rolled them in a seasoned flour made of paprika, garlic powder and salt. Fry them in oil for about 1-2 minutes or until golden brown and they are ready to be eaten!
