2016 Miami Sportfish Tournament

The Tournament
It was another spring time Saturday in late April when my family went out to fish the Miami Sportfish, another local Miami tournament. The tournament used to be called the Miami Billfish Tournament but two years the tournament directors changed it to a meatfish tournament. We were not disappointed, this is our favorite type of fishing.

I was watching the bow kite while my mom and brother watched the middle and back kites. It was just as we had finished putting our last kite bait out and my dad walked away to go set a deep line. I had my eyes glued to my baits and saw a GIANT kingfish air out about 30ft near my long. My brother had hooked and was fighting a shark so I instantly got extremely nervous. I yelled "Big King!" and everyone turned and saw the hole in the water that he left. I immediately picked up the rod and dropped back 20lb Bullbuster Mono to it.
After about 5 seconds of dropping back i locked up my reel and checked my drag. He ran straight to the back so I had to weave my way through 2 kite rods and 6 kite baits where I finally made it to the back where I stood on the bracket leaning my weight against the motors while my fish ran. There were sharks everywhere! We were marking crazy sharks and fighting sharks on our deep lines left and right.
My fish made one intense run where I began to think a shark got a hold of him I was really starting to stress. I finally put enough heat on him where he turned around and i got him to the boat. Jon Henry grabbed my pink gaff and stuck him. The fish didn't like that feeling. He tried to run under the boat, but Jon didn't let go of my gaff (thankfully) Mike Welter rushed over with the gold gaff and took a second shot and together they pulled him into the boat. When lines out came, we took him to the scale where he stood 57lbs!
