Grouper Fishing From Land In Tampa
It is not everyday that you can catch a keeper Gag Grouper in 10 Feet of water during the summertime. Fishing the local bridges in Tampa Bay offers great opportunity to catch Groupers such as Gag Grouper and Goliath Grouper which are prohibited to eat but put up a fight.
The Gag Grouper though you can eat and are in season now. They have to be 24" minimum to keep. The Gag Grouper I caught was right at the 24" mark. The reel I was using was a 6500 Spinfisher V series reel spooled with 65 lb braid. The rod I had was a Shimano Teramar 8ft rod that I really like using for Groupers, Snook, and Tarpon. I was using 60lb Bullbuster Monofilament Leader but you can also bump it up to 80 if needed. The tactic I like to use for the Grouper is first getting them fired up with cut bait such as threadfins and later dropping down a big juicy bait to get the attention of a big one. My favorite like bait are pinfish, pigfish, or a large greenback free lined. I was using a nice large live greenback to catch the keeper Grouper. The Grouper decided to rock me once it was hooked but the secret is if a gag grouper rocks you in the bottom is to thump the line and you should slowly feel him to start to come out of his hole, it slowly came out and the Bullbuster held up strong.
