Wondering What Gear You Need To Catch A Goliath?
"This Goliath was pulling drag, and shortly after broke off, or at least that's what we thought"
We took this video a few months ago, but I still can't get over what this Goliath did to this hook. We had our Makaira 50w spooled with Bullbuster 500lb Mono (to prevent breaking off on the wreck). For those who don't know, this reel is rated @ 85lbs of drag, and we had the drag preset maxed out.

This Goliath was pulling drag, and shortly after broke off, or at least that's what we thought. When we reeled the line back up, we quickly realized we where hooked up to a monster and it completely straighten our hook.

To prevent this from happening again, we have switched to Owner 18/0 Circle Hooks. These hooks are extremely strong and work perfect for this application. We have come to believe that wide gaped circle hooks tend to have less strength and allow the fish to get better leverage to straighten the hook.
