"A great way to spend an otherwise uneventful winter day with friends dreaming and debating over which of the displayed battlewagons would be our dream boats."

The 2017 edition of the New York Boat Show set anchor this past weekend in the Javitts Center on Manhattan's West Side. This show has been around FOREVER, though to be completely fair the number of manufacturers displaying their lines in this Show (and public attendance) has dwindled over the years. None of that matters to me as I see the Show as a great way to spend an otherwise uneventful winter day with friends dreaming and debating over which of the displayed battlewagons would be our dream boats.

This year's Show, as it has been for past two or three years, was dominated by center console boats. The fishing/family features makers are stuffing into these boats appears to be a large part of their popularity.

A growing interest in center consoles.

While the LARGE center consoles have been a staple in the southern markets for years, it is only the last several that we have seen that popularity rise here on Long Island. This years show provided plenty of evidence as demonstrated by the number of center console boats 36 feet LOA and greater.

Of course with the increase in Length Overall comes the need for the horsepower to push these big boats. And in these large center consoles that power is delivered by strapping two, three and even four BIG outboards on the stern.

350 hp outboard engines

When I was a kid I remember there was a single boat (SeaOx I believe) that ran around our bay with TWO outboards. We all would watch in amazement as the boat would pass dreaming of the day when we would all be SO RICH that we could have a boat like that. How things have changed in the 50+ years since then.

Until next time, tight lines to all
